2008 Zeitgeist Syrah Mt. Veeder Napa Valley
In 2008 we discovered a dramatic vineyard site on Mt. Veeder in Napa Valley. The vineyard is named Bald Mountain Vineyards for the treeless peak that overlooks the upper blocks. Terraces were cut into the steep mountain with each bank supported by hand stacked rock. On these terraces and facing west toward the Sonoma Valley is our Syrah block, rising up to an elevation of over 2000 ft. Subject to a pleasant coastal breeze and entirely dry-farmed, the fruit is naturally concentrated.
We used a combination of whole cluster and whole berry fermentation and selected Rhone style barrels for this tiny project. The resulting wine is opulent, dense and fully statured. It was in barrel for 20 months and is ready to be drunk immediately. Only two barrels were selected for bottling. 47 cases produced.
